Прилагательному высокий соответствуют английские high, tall и lofty, различающиеся оттенками значения. High предполагает большую протяженность снизу вверх (особенно часто о том, что возвышается над основанием, фундаментом или о том, что поднято на значительную высоту над плоскостью): высокая гора – high mountain, высокое здание – high building, высокий потолок – high ceiling. Tall имеет в виду высокий рост: человек высокого роста – tall person, а также большую высоту в сравнении с предметами того же рода (особенно о предметах с небольшим диаметром): высокий шест – tall pole.
